At first it was a fiddle, then a guitar … and now a debut single you simply won’t get out of your head. That’s been the standout trajectory for Finis Smith, a Texas native who splits his time between raising cattle and writing songs. Born in Abilene, Texas and raised on his family ranch in Ivan, Texas, Finis fell in love with music early. He picked up his great grandmother’s fiddle at age 7 and never quite put it down.
It’s no shock Smith carved out a creative path for himself - as performing always played a part in his lineage. His late father, Dean Smith, was a track and field Olympic Gold Medalist who later transitioned to a professional actor and stuntman, a job that allowed him to star in iconic western films including The Alamo and How The West Was Won. Dean Smith served as a constant source of inspiration to Finis, teaching him how to cattle-ranch while also advocating for his dreams of being an artist. Even in his father’s absence, his encouragement is felt.
Today, Smith’s music pays tribute to some of the sounds you might hear in a Merle Haggard or George Jones song, but with a contemporary twist that is signature Smith.
His breakout song, “Ain’t Love Grand” was inspired by the sounds of George Strait (who just happens to be his dream collaborator) and has already climbed the Texas Regional Radio chart while growing on streaming platforms.
Simply put, the song is an instant serotonin boost - inspired by 90s country classics with an upbeat tempo, hopeful lyrics and a voice that will pave the way for a long-lasting career. Smith has already won the Cowtown Society of Western Music Newcomer Award. Today, Finis wears multiple hats (and only some of them are Cowboy) He raises Hereford-Angus cross cattle, models for brands like Cavenders and Cowboys & Indians and is currently in the studio producing new music while performing throughout Texas.
